FEATURED SELLER: Fanaberia - Basia Wertelecka

Basia is the person behind two Etsy stores Fanaberia - where she hand knit lace and original clothes and Bibere where she specializes in hand dyed and hand spun yarn. 

In this great interview she went not one but two extra miles by responding to all questions in both English and Polish. Enjoy! (Zapraszam:)

Tell us bit about yourself 

I have the luck when it comes to people. Everyone whom I've met had an influence on the way I look at the world. Some taught me sensitivity, others taught me humbleness. I am the sum of their experiences. I think that it’s good to be conscious of that. It gives me great freedom and satisfaction.

I was born in Wroclaw, Poland I studied in Wroclaw, I married there and gave birth to my son. It’s an amazing city with amazing people, and although I love it dearly and it will always be my place on Earth,  for the last several years I live in Prague. Here I breathe art. Contrary to what you may think, both of these places are very alike.

Mam w życiu szczęście do ludzi. Wszyscy, których spotkałam mięli wpływ na moje spostrzeganie świata. Jedni uczą mnie wrażliwości, inni pokory. Jestem sumą ich doświadczeń. Myślę, że dobrze jest mieć  taką  świadomość. Mnie daje ona ogromną wolność i niezależność.

Urodziłam się we Wrocławiu, we Wrocławiu skończyłam studia, wyszłam za mąż, urodziłam syna. To niezwykłe miasto z niezwykłymi ludźmi i choć kocham je nad życie i zawsze będzie moim miejscem na ziemi od kilku lat mieszkam w Pradze. Tu oddycham sztuką. Wbrew pozorom te miejsca wiele łączy.

Apart from creating, what do you do?

I search for inspiration. I read, travel, participate in exhibitions, learn constantly. I organize workshops on how to hand-spin wool, which I lead myself. I also invite Czech craftsman for presentations in Poland.

Poszukuję inspiracji. Czytam, podróżuję, uczestniczę w wystawach, nieustająco uczę się  . Organizuję szkolenia ręcznego przędzenia wełny, sama je prowadzę i zapraszam na pokazy w Polsce doświadczonych rzemieślników z Czech.

Describe your creative process.

Everything happens at night. I work like every other owl. I start to think creatively while others go to sleep. I am a craftsman, not an artist, so I humbly listen to what the material I work with has to say. I make many samples, calculations, but sometimes the idea for sweater, lace or wool just “appears” in my head and I know from A to Z how it’s supposed to look like. A kind of “Eureka” moment. Then I sit down and work as long as it’s necessary to get it done. My husband and son understand that, and really, without them, none of it would have any sense.

Wszystko dzieje się w nocy. Pracuję jak każda sowa.  Zaczynam kreatywnie myśleć, kiedy inni kładą się spać. Jestem rzemieślnikiem, nie artystą, więc z pokorą słucham, co ma mi do powiedzenia materiał z jakim pracuję. Wykonuję wiele próbek, obliczeń, ale czasami jest tak, że pomysł na sweter, koronkę lub wełnę po prostu pojawia się we mnie i wiem od „a” do „z” jak ma wyglądać. Siadam i pracuję tak długo aż go skończę. Mój mąż i syn rozumieją to , zresztą bez nich nic nie miałoby sensu.

What advice would you give to other artists on Etsy?

I am not a mega-seller, so I cannot advise on how to sell large, quickly and efficiently. I can assure you however, that the joy that stems from creation, the regular customers and their kind words, are a huge force. It’s important to work systematically, to create new and unique products. Don’t worry about a momentary lack of sales – I think that consequential, regular work will always pay off. 

Nie jestem mega sprzedawcą, więc nie mogę radzić jak dużo, szybko i skutecznie sprzedawać. Mogę jednak zapewnić, że  radość tworzenia, stali klienci i ich miłe słowa są wielką siłą.  Ważne jest, by pracować systematycznie, tworzyć nowe i  niepowtarzalne  rzeczy. Nie martwić się brakiem sprzedaży, myślę, że konsekwencja zawsze się opłaca.

What inspires you?

Everything that I see, watch and hear. I am very luck to live in Prague, which is a truly magical place. Here, every stone speaks to my imagination. I like to visit Czech museums, where I spent hours watching beautiful textiles, laces and embroidery.  But I also draw my inspiration from meetings with people that like me, work with art or crafts. I love such meetings!

Wszystko co widzę, oglądam i słyszę . Mam to szczęście, że mieszkam w Pradze, a to miejsce magiczne. Tu, do mojej wyobraźni mówi każdy kamień. Lubię  odwiedzać czeskie muzea, gdzie godzinami mam szanse oglądać piękne tkaniny, koronki i hafty. Ale inspiracją są dla mnie również spotkania i rozmowy z osobami, które podobnie jak ja zajmują się rękodziełem lub sztuką. Kocham takie spotkania!
